Hi Allisondavino,

The utility rates in your area will dictate which way to go, whether gas or electric. Here on the west coast we have some of the highest electrical rates in the country, thus we use gas appliances whenever possible. As a general rule, electrical appliances cost less to purchase, however the cost of electricity will in many cases result in a higher overall cost over the lifetime of the appliance than gas. If you live in a rural area and are on propane, electrical appliances may be your only choice.

Are you talking about the price of buying the appliance or using the appliance?  Typically gas appliances are more expensive to buy (a gas dryer is typically about $100 more than it’s electric sibling).

In terms of energy usage, the first place to look is at the yellow “Energy Guide” label.  That will give you the average cost to use the appliance for a year.  Those numbers are based on national averages, which you may have to adjust depending on what energy costs in your area and how you use the appliance.  The U.S. Department of Energy also has a lot of information on picking energy efficient appliances and offers calculators where you can plug in your own numbers to get an annual cost.
