Dipladenia

Rio Dipladenias at the cottage

Move over geraniums here comes Dipladenia!

There is a new flower face in town, the northeast has welcomed and embrace the tropic plant named Dipladenia, and boy do we love it!

This fantastic sun lover produces blooms all season long, like the ever-loving geranium it will tolerate parching, late afternoon sun the Dipladenia thrives in places were other plants fail.

Unlike the geranium, Dipladenia does not have to be dead headed; this plant surrenders the spent blooms on its own and flushes out with new blossoms throughout the entire season.

The beautiful, waxy, deep green leaves are shiny and strong; the branching will actually twist and climb with a little help. This plant does it all and it is looks so delicate and pretty, but it is rougher and tougher than any geranium could hope to be.

Dipladenia will tolerate a dry spell, so if you go away it will forgive you if you are unable to water for a few days it is perfect in hanging basket, window boxes or planters.

Dipladenia is a great cemetery plant…..it doesn’t need to be dead headed, doesn’t require daily watering, and blooms profusely until the frost. This is the plant that I now recommend for the cemetery.

So this is it…my new favorite plant, Dipladenia:  it loves the sun, prefers drier soil (less watering), self-cleaning, blooms like crazy, and comes in shades of pink, red and white. Butterflies and humming birds are attracted to the glorious trumpet flower head. The plant can also winter over as a tropical plant in the house for the winter….you really cannot ask for anything more in a plant.

Stop by your local Home Depot and check out the Dipladenia, the plant is displayed and for sale in hanging basket, drop in pots, trellised climbing pots, combo planters, and individual plants as well, there is one just waiting for you!   Give this plant a try you will be so happy you did,     Maureen
