One of the most frequent questions I receive in the store is “What causes the white residue left on my dishes and in my dishwasher?”

This white residue is caused by with high levels of minerals in the water supply. When water is heated the minerals separate from the water and cling to anything washed with that water.

This phenomenon is known as hard water.

The majority of these minerals are left in the water heater itself, and they travel from the water heater to your appliances that use hot water.

In the past dishwasher detergent manufacturers used phosphates to help remove these deposits, however those same phosphates were found to pollute the environment and the EPA has banned their use.

Since then dishwasher detergent manufacturers have struggled to find a replacement, and still are working on reformulating their detergents to help prevent the minerals deposits from being left behind in our dishwashers.

The video below discusses the problem and offers a solution.
