Easter Cactus

Cactus and succulents are the fastest “growing” category in the world of houseplants.

Cactus and succulents have always been popular because of their beauty and the ease of care but availability and varieties were limited, that is not the case anymore!

Stop by your local Home Depot and check out all the wonderful varieties of cactus and succulents that are now available. Varieties vary from store to store, but there is a wide range of sizes, shapes and colors all I can say is expect the unexpected!

Spring flowering cactus: Hatiora gaertneri, looks similar to Christmas cactus but is a far distant cousin. Spring or Easter cactus blooms once a year during late March thru May, it has smooth sided lobed leaflets and is in the epiphytic family of plants, (air plant) it is native to South America and grows in the crevices of tree bark, gathering its nutrients from the air by the roots.

The Easter cactus enjoys morning sun, afternoon shade (sheer curtain) with cool nighttime temperatures, prefers drier soil, allow soil to dry between watering, but add bit more moisture during active flowering time, the cooler the indoor temperatures the longer the blooms will last. The Easter cactus is an easy-care houseplant that will reward its caregiver a beautiful, early springtime display of magical, petite blooms!

The magic of spring is happening at your local Home Depot,  expect the unexpected and be prepared to be dazzled!

Welcome spring!
