Extension Jamb

Hello, I have extension jambs for a 5x8 window that stick out too far from the wall by 1/2 inch on one side and 1 inch on the other.  What's the best way to fix this?  I've had people tell me to pound in the nails in the jamb all the way to the stud to remove the jamb and re-cut them, but I don't want to accidentally hit the window with a hammer.  Is there a saw that will cut the nails that will not do too much damage to the drywall?  Any other ideas?
Thank you.

Driving the nails through the extension jamb to remove it only work if the nails used were "regular" nails.  If they were from a pneumatic nailer, it won't work.  If they were regular nails, tape a thin piece of plywood, hardboard, etc. over the glass to protect it.

If you want to just cut the nails, what you are looking for is called an oscillating tool.  Every tool manufacturer offers one and some are rather inexpensive.  They are light weight, safe and easy to use.  Use a metal cutting blade.
