How do you move the Location of the Washer/Dryer

The current washer and dryer location is in an awkward location off the kitchen. The garage door opens directly onto the dryer; the drying unit goes directly out to the AC Unit. How do we move the location of the washer/dryer to another location that’s nearby a water pipe? Should we hire a contractor or can we do this ourselves?

Hello TTAyers,

It would be best to hire a contractor to perform the work in this case. Moving the washer will require not only re-plumbing water lines, you will have to re-run the drain as well. The dryer will need the exhaust duct relocated to another spot through your walls. The biggest concern by far is the relocation of the 240v electrical circuit that the dryer requires. This would be a difficult project depending on how extensively things will need moving. I hope this helps.

Cheers,

Chris

With all due respect, if you are asking about the complexity of the project you’re probably not qualified to do the work.  Depending on how far you want to move the washer/dryer and how your home is constructed, it could be a major (read expensive) project.  Off hand:

  • Relocate/extend 120v circuit
  • Relocate/extend 240v circuit (for electric dryer).  If it’s an old 3-wire circuit, you’ll need to bring it up to current code with 4 wires.
  • Relocate/extend gas line (for gas dryer)
  • Relocate/extend hot/cold water supply lines
  • Relocate/extend drain line including vent (which could be quite complicated)
  • Run new dryer vent
  • Patch interior and exterior walls

If you really want to move your appliances I would suggest calling a few contractors and getting estimates.
