How full is a 5 gallon bucket when filled with a 50 lb bag of quickcrete?

I want to sink a 6' post in a 5 gallon bucket filled with quickcrete.  I'm trying to calculate how much quickcrete I'll need to use.  I have planned on using just 1 50 lb bag of quickcrete.  Will that fill the bucket?

Hi Rocknerd.

Thank you for your great question.

A 50lb bag of Quikrete is .375 cubic feet. Your 5 gallon bucket is 0.7777850 cubic feet dry.  You will need 2 - 50lb bags of Quikrete Fast Setting Concrete Mix to complete your project.

Please let us know if we can be of further assistance.

You don't want to try to mix concrete in a 5 gallon bucket.  By a cheap pan.  Will give you the room to properly mix the concrete without making a mess.

About $6.

Ooops.  I misread your message.

You don't want to put a post in plastic bucket.  What will happen is the bucket will hold moisture and concrete is porous.  That will just accelerate the decay of the bottom end of your post.

Instead, dig a hole and put a couple or three inches of crushed stone at the bottom to allow for drainage.  Then mix concrete and pour in or use the mix that just needs to be wetted.  If this is something like a deck where you need an actual footing, then use one of the cardboard tubes and mix the concrete.
