Paint stain on wooden floor

Hi my friends recently painted a room and did a horrible job at keeping the paint on just the walls they failed to lay out adaquit protection and managed to get the paint every you would think the room was a art studio if you walked in it's been a few weeks and the paint has now dried my question is instead of trying to remove the paint is it possible to stain over it on the hard wood floors and just cover it up

Hello wvryanrucker304 and welcome to the Community.

Acrylic/latex paint that has dried and cured, can usually be removed by rubbing with denatured alcohol on a terry cloth rag.  Goof Off on a rag will usually remove latex paint with out damaging the varnish on the wood flooring.

Oil base paints can be more problematic.  Lacquer thinner on a terrycloth rag is very effective on removing oil base paint but can also take the floors finish of as well. Mineral Spirits is less effective on dried oil base paint but is less likely to damage the floors finish.

Test the solvents in an inconspicuous spot to determine which will work best without damaging the floors varnish.

Next time, save yourself a big hassle and make a small investment in a drop clothe, weather canvas or plastic.

After you have removed the paint you may want to apply a hardwood flooring cleaner and/or Restorer.

It is not a good idea to try and put stain over the paint.  You will end up with a much bigger problem.

Thanks for your inquiry.

You certainly can try getting the paint up sing Goof off or denatured alcohol, but the reality is that you will get poor results. Pigment residue will remain generally. The white pigment will collect in the joints and stand out like a sore thumb!
Don't shoot the messenger, but your best option is to sand and refinish the floor.

To answer your question whether you can stain the floor.? No you can't. Stain will only penetrate bare wood. You can paint the floor. You can possibly carpet the floor, but nothing short of sanding the floor to bare wood will result in nice, natural floors.
