Staining Vinyl Gate

Can a vinyl gate be stained?  Will stain adhere to vinyl, and if so, what type of stain is recommended and what would be the process to do this?  Thanks.

Hey D1000,

Thanks for your question and welcome to the community.

Vinyl as a substrate isn't a natural cellulose based material like wood that would allow for almost any stain to penetrate its surface.

Another way of putting it is that all the stains found at your local Home Depot will NOT work on any vinyl surfaces. There are gel stains that possibly could work, but I've found that even these aren't suitable for outdoor areas.

Even if you found an exterior grade gel stain, there are additional tools to give the surface wood grain designs. Without it, it would look extremely sloppy and unprofessional.

If you are not familiar with this process, it can be very tedious and time consuming. Personally, just don't do it (even if you found any stain that could adhere to vinyl). It just won't look good versus properly painting over it.

One option you could try is to use an exterior grade primer and then paint to color it in a solid color that is similar to stain. This would be the easiest and most effective option for you.

Never stain anything that isn't rated for it, and almost always, vinyl is that material that usually can never be stained. Like putting carpet in a bathroom,  there are just some things you should never do.

Let us know if this has assisted you,

Joseph
