Stone fireplace pain idea

I want to update my stone fireplace. I'm thinking of painting it matte gray. Any recommendations?

Hey JK123,

Thanks for your question and welcome to the community.

Whether or not the fireplace gets a lot of use, the very first step I would recommend is to thoroughly clean it first. Using a degreaser or a TSP cleaner can go a long way to making sure the surface is prepared to paint.

After making sure the surface is clean, you can then opt for an oil or alcohol based primer, like Zinsser or Kilz. Afterwards, you can choose a high quality top coat of a matte finish of your choice.

Preparation is key, so make sure to clean and prime first to ensure your final paint will look and perform its best for years to come. Be mindful that a lot of water-based paints aren't suitable for high temperatures, so if the fireplace is active and used frequently, I would recommend a high temperature resistant paint.

Let us know if you have any further questions,

Joseph
