Using shims for squeaky floors

I feel like this is a silly question, but I am new to home repair so please humor me.

I have looked at several articles describing how to stop a squeak.  They say use construction glue and a wooden shim, being careful not to insert the shim too deeply.  So far so good, but all the pictures show them inserting the tip of an entire shim in, and then it moves on.
So my question is - how do you get rid of the several inches of shim that are just hanging out there?

Hello SherreeC, and welcome to the Community!

For the portion of the shim that is sticking out or hanging over, take a utility knife and score or cut the shim and snap it off, after you snap it off you should barely see the shim.
