A multimeter is an electronic tool that measures current, volts, amps, resistance and continuity. They are either analog (with a needle display) or digital (with an electronic display). Multimeters are used to diagnose circuits (continuity) measure voltage, and even test a battery. Hence the 'multi'-'meter' (multiple measurement) name.
Analog Multimeter
Around the house a multimeter allows you to test a circuit to make sure it is active (continuous) and functional. Test electronic components, troubleshoot your cars wiring or determine why your clock radio died.
I have used
mine to test my cars alternator, repair my clothes dryer and test batteries. If
you are a serious DIYER, a multimeter is must have for your toolbox.
The next time you visit your local Home Depot, stop by the electrical department and check out the multimeters.
