What In The World Is An Infrared Thermometer?

The world of electronic devices has come a long way in the last few years; the introduction of lasers into the tool environment has resulted in many new and useful electronic tools such as the laser tape measure and laser levels. Now we have infrared tools such as the infrared thermometer.

The infrared thermometer uses a laser beam as a pointing device to discern the temperature of almost any object that emits electromagnetic radiation.

The infrared thermometer measures the electromagnetic radiation emitted by the object and converts the infrared temperature and its emissivity, (the materials effectiveness in emitting energy as thermal radiation) to the device, which then calculates the temperature in Celsius or Fahrenheit.

Klein Infrared Thermometer

The design essentially consists of a lens to focus the infrared thermal radiation on a detector, which converts the radiant power to an electrical signal, which is displayed in units of temperature after being compensated for ambient temperature.

This permits temperature measurement from a distance without contact with the object, making the device very useful in circumstances where access is limited or the object is too dangerous to approach, emitting very high heat or has moving parts, such as automobile engines or electrical equipment. Measuring temperatures at heating outlets or the burners on your cooktop or the temperature level of your wall oven.

Hospitals use Infrared thermometers to measure the body temperature of patients without touching them and possibly awaking them or transmitting disease.

The next time you need an accurate and safe measurement of the temperature of any object, consider buying an infrared thermometer.
