What In The World Is a Jack Stud?

In the carpentry trade there are a number of terms used to describe certain components of a wood frame building. Rafter, Joist, birds’ eye, stud, sill, header, etc. All are parts of a wood frame. Today we will look at what a Jack Stud is.

A jack stud supports the header in a door or window opening. The header supports structure above the opening. Jack studs are also known as trimmers as window and door trim is applied and nailed to the jack stud. The jack stud is nailed to the king stud which is part of the wall framing, which completes the opening.

So, the next time you visit a building under construction and you want to impress your friend ask them what that piece of the frame is, and when they draw a blank, you can say it's a jack stud!
