Build & Remodel

header size

I am in the design phase of of putting a small addition on the master bath of my house . To do this I will need to put a header where the roof ends now , the opening will be 6 feet the roof over the new section will run at 90 degrees to the existing . I was hoping a 2x6 doubled will handle the span so the ceiling wouldn't be too low . can anybody tell me if that is enough or point me to where I can find out ?

Most municipalities require a permit for structural changes which would include plans stamped by a licensed structural engineer.  There’s a lot of be considered when calculating loads and it’s not something that should be untaken by a neophyte.

It will add to the cost of your project but probably a lot less to fix any mistakes that you discover later.
