Hi Colts 1415,

Water heater thermostats are sometimes called the thermostatic control, or gas control valve.

In any case they can be replaced, they can cost anywhere from $60.00 to $100.00, just for the part.

You can buy a new thermostat at most plumbing supply stores or from the manufacturer of your water heater.

However the thermostat usually lasts the life of the water heater. If yours has failed other parts are not far behind.

If your water heater is over 8 years old I would forget the thermostat and replace the water heater.

Mike,

They can certainly be replaced, it's a question of your skill level.  Can you post a picture of your water heater, especially the themostat/gas valve so we can see what's going on.
