18V Li ion battery vs 18v Ni Cad with Ryobi tools

1. Can the 18V Li-ion battery be used with the older Ryobi tools that used Ni-cad batteries?

2. Is a newer battery charger designed specifically for the Li-ion battery required?

Hey Kahuna472.

You can use the new Lithium batteries with the old Ryobi tools but you will have to buy a new charger in order to charge them, as the old chargers wont charge Lithium batteries.

RYOBI 18-Volt one plus System introduces the next generation in lithium-ion performance. Lithium plus batteries improve the performance of RYOBI 18-Volt one plus power tools beyond simply extending the runtime. This compact battery improves the performance of Ryobi 18-Volt one plus tools by up to 15-percentage. They provide up to 35-percentage more runtime, hold a charge 4X longer and are 45-percentage lighter weight than Ni-Cd batteries. Lithium plus batteries have extreme weather performance to continue work in harsh conditions and an on-board fuel gauge to Check Your Charge before the work begins. Lithium plus batteries provide fade-free power for maximum performance throughout the charge. Best of all, like all 18-Volt One plus batteries, it works with Over 50 great one plus tools.

  • Batteries are compatible with all ryobi 18-volt one plus tools
  • Compared to 18-volt Ni-Cd (P100): Up to 35-percentage more runtime
  • 45-Percentage lighter weight reduces user fatigue
  • On-board fuel gauge to check your charge
  • Fade-free power for maximum performance
