3 Ways to Prepare Your Soil for a Spring Vegetable Garden

Howdy Fellow Gardeners,

It is that time again when we say so long to the Winter and get ready for Spring. With Spring comes our vegetable gardens too. So let us take a moment and think about some ideas to get the best results.

1.   Clear the area of weeds and grass where the garden will be. Container gardening might be easier, but since the plot of land is already there, it can be used. Since there is a drip irrigation system, I will be pulling weeds by hand instead of using a garden cultivator or other tool.

2.  Test the soil with a test kit every year to keep up on the condition of the soil. Electronic and chemistry kits can give you a good reading on how well, or not so well your soil is doing.

3.  Add organic matter and amend with nutrients as needed.  If I am growing Tomatoes then adding some compost or other organic matter not only keep the weeds down, but also keep the soil nice and loose so the plants grow healthy.

Whew, that weed pulling was tiring, but the future vegetables will make it worth all the effort.

Happy Gardening,

Coach Dave
