The amount of paint needed will vary on several differing factors.

The most important one is the color..If it will require more than one coat to properly cover.

Next is the sheen..Many sheens like eggshell, satin, and semi-gloss will require at least two coats for proper appearance.

Lastly is condition of the wall surface..Is it new drywall, is it rough, does it have many repair patches, etc.

To figure out square footage of a wall; multiply the length times the height of the wall.  Take out any large openings like windows and doors to come to the total square footage.

In the case of an 8x10 wall = the square footage would be 80 sq/Ft

An average gallon of paint will have a ratio of coverage anywhere from 200 - 300 sq/Ft.

A quart may only get you 50 sq/Ft.

Keep in mind that two quarts of paint are usually the same cost as purchasing a whole gallon.
