Above Garage Storage Space

I have a 3 car garage and I want to add a drop down ladder and plywood so I can store items up there. My question is: Can I do this without having the roof collapse with the extra weight? Or do I have to add support beams? If so how and where?

Thank you,

MrsZavala

Hi MrsZavala,

Thanks for your question and welcome to the community!

It all takes planning to get the right extra space in your garage. Depending on how you construct it and what you want to store up there will determine how it will be built.

If you've never tackled a project like this, especially with dealing with frame members and load bearing capabilities, I'd recommend you hire or at least consult a contractor who can assist you.

Failure to construct a solid build can lead to injury, or worse. Again, it all takes planning and knowing what you want, and you can indeed build an attic folding stairs, plywood for the floor, and joists.

Since there are various forms of garage sizes and what you'd personally like, I can only offer these tips at the moment since we would need a lot more information from you.
