Hey Mokay2000,

Thanks for joining us here on the community.

If this is a window (and not portable) A/C unit, then it's advisable to place the side panels, if possible.

I seriously doubt you have an instance where the opening perfectly fits only unit itself. The panels are there for giving the unit a proper seal, but if absolutely necessary, it can be installed without it.

Instead of going in that direction, let's back up here for a minute. What type of unit do you have and what type of opening to you it a window with a sill or just an opening in say, a brick/masonry wall?

Let us know, and we can delve into this further.

Hello Mokay2000.

An A/C unit with side panels is made to be installed in windows.  An A/C unit without side panels is designed to be installed in walls.  They are generally not interchangeable.  If you have a window unit that is simply missing the side panels, they may be available through the manufacturer.
