Hello earniep325!

Aluminum requires four steps to re-coat:

1) Remove the flake until the remaining paint is fully adhered, then buff sand the entire pole with 220-grit;

2) Use Phosphoric Etcher to remove the white power and prep the aluminum for primer'

3) Prime with Rust-Oleum Clean Metal Primer ... an oil-based interior/exterior primer designed for aluminum; and

4) Paint with Rust-Oleum oil-based paint in your color and sheen of choice.

These steps will prep the aluminum and create a long-lasting finish.

RustOlleum also makes a self-etching aluminum primer in spray cans which is under the "Professional" label.  It is white in color.
