Zinnias come in just about any color that you can think of. These tall growing flowers are native to Mexico and come in pinks, reds, purples, yellow, orange, cream and white. Many varieties can cast a shadow over nearby flowers, therefore consider leaving some space between these flowers and others.

There are a variety of different Zinnias. Some can grow as tall as 4 feet and some dwarf varieties will grow 6 inches tall. It has been my experience with these plants that they demand full sun and proper air circulation. They grow so tall that they tend to shade themselves which makes them subject to powdery mildew and black spots on the leaves. Avoid watering flowers overhead and plant in a well drained soil.

This plants huge flowers are unmistakable and they make quite a splash of color in perennial and annual flower beds. After the last frost date these plants can be easily planted as a seed or as a potted plant. Bury seeds 1/4 inch deep in a loose garden soil and water regularly and you will see them emerging within the week.

When planting put 2 inches of pine bark mini nuggets or pine mulch around the plants to hold in moisture to keep from always having to watering them.
