Apply Post-Emergent To Kill Actively Growing Weeds

Weeds that are actively growing in your lawn can be controlled with selective herbicides. The Home Depot offers these products to kill weeds without harming your lawn.  Some of the brands that we carry include Ortho, BayerAdvanced, IMAGE and Spectrum, utilizing many different active ingredients to target various weeds.

The most common active ingredient is 2,4-D. This chemical systemically kills broadleaf weeds without harming grasses. Of course, some grasses are more resistant to 2,4-D, while other grasses are harmed by 2,4-D. Fescue and Zoysia are quite resilient to 2,4-D while St. Augustine grass and centipede grass are harmed by it. Carefully read and follow all label instructions before applying any of these products.

Weed-B-Gon, Spectracide Weed Stop and BayerAdvanced Lawn Weed Killer are examples of products that include 2,4-D as one of their active ingredients. These products will kill over 250 broadleaf weeds without harming the listed lawn grasses. Some of the additional ingredients target specific weeds, such as crabgrass, so consider all of the active ingredients before applying to your lawn.

Sometimes the weed is actually another form of grass that has established itself in your lawn. Fescue growing in a Bermuda lawn is a classic example of that. IMAGE Nutsedge Killer uses Imazaquin as its active ingredient to control certain broadleaved weeds as well as some grasses. Rye and fescue are examples of grasses that are controlled by imazaquin. IMAGE Nutsedge Killer is only for use in established Bermuda, Zoysia, St. Augustine, centipede and Buffalo grass lawns.

These post emergent herbicides are intended to kill actively growing weeds. Most enter through the foliage of the weed and transpire through the plant to the roots, where the plant is then killed. IMAGE Nutsedge Killer is an exception to this rule. Imazaquin is applied to the soil surface and is allowed to dry there for 24 hours. 1 to 7 days later, the lawn needs to receive enough rain or water to wash the dried imazaquin down, into the root zone of the weeds where it is then absorbed by the weeds.

Atrazine is another selective weed killer for use in areas of the country that are more tropical. Scott’s offers Bonus-S, a weed and feed product. Bonus-S is only for use on St. Augustinegrass (including Floratam), zoysia, centipede, and carpetgrass lawns. Atrazine will control many of the weeds that plague the warmer climate areas. IMAGE for St. Augustinegrass and Centipedegrass offers a liquid product that utilizes atrazine. Do not apply this product containing atrazine to Bermuda or fescue lawns.

Schedule your applications of these herbicides so that they will have the most impact on your weeds. You should limit the number of applications to no more than two(2) applications per year of any particular herbicide. Wait and apply the product when conditions are optimum and the weeds are thriving. Follow all of the instructions on the product label for the best results.
