Banister replacement

I have a banister that is to short and I am ripping it out. The banister connects to one wall and has a newel post, and the sucker is loose. first question how do I make the new newel post more sturdy, and is there a certain measurement for the actual rails.

Hi Krandall - we are glad to see you here on the community.

There are new stair codes for building and construction that state:

The newel post will have to be secured at the base - usually with a heavy bolt in the middle.  Most newel posts already have these installed and can be tightened again if they have become loose.  Look for a round cap at the base of the post that looks exactly like the wood grain.

You will have to tighten the nut (which requires some patience) until the post is secure again.

Hope this helps.
