Barn floor beam replacement

Friend is renting a barn, and the 8x8" floor beam is actually broken, and is being held up by a 2x8 "on end.  How would you replace the beam?

Basically you need to take the load off the existing beam, generally by jacking up whatever is above it.  Slip out the old beam and install a new one.  You aren't going to find a 8x8 beam at Home Depot so you'd need to replace it with conventional or engineered lumber depending on the load and the span.  What size beam you need is really something that should be determined by a qualified professional.

An 8x8 beam being supported by a 2x8 doesn't sound right either.  Again, you need a qualified professional make an onsite inspection.
