Howdy JBurgess1,

Welcome to the Home Depot community. I've done more than a few paving projects from backyards to entry ways and have seen more than one way to do a project.

Using paver sand will give you the long term results your looking for. Paver sand has rocks in it as well as many different sizes of rocks to give you a solid foundation.

Play sand has been bleached and sifted to have a consistant size of sand. The sizes that have no variation would allow for shifting of pavers in height and spacing. Sooner or later you would be doing this project again and not saving any money.

I checked our shelf and  website and the price wasn't even a dollar difference. Judging from experience where I have done everything from using regular sand as a base, and even just laying the pavers down without any base, I was always wishing I had done it right the first time.

Happy Gardening,
