Behr Deckover

We stained our deck with Behr Deckover yesterday morning after spending the day before sanding and cleaning our old deck. After 3 hours of staining we thought the deck looked great. Now today we have nickel size bubbles forming on the surface. What's up with that and how do we fix this?

Hi Smokey22,

I suspect the deck was not completely dry before you applied the Behr Deckover. If you power washed the deck the pressure forces moisture into the wood and even if the surface appears dry there is still considerable moisture in the wood fibers.

This moisture is now trying to escape and causing the bubbles in the finish. Behr recommends at the minimum of 24 hours before applying the finish after washing the deck, if it's in a humid climate or if rain is threatening, allow a longer drying time.

I would recommend 48 hours drying time in most cases, just to be safe,

Sand down the surface and let the wood dry completely, then try reapplying the Deckover.

Hi Smokey,

Just need a few more details.

Were all of your boards aged?

What surface was on your deck before?

When you sanded, was the entire old surface removed or just the flaking/peeling surfaces?

Was the entire deck bare wood before you began the wash?

Which wash did you use?

How was the surface rinsed?

How long did the surface dry after washing ... before you began applying DeckOver?

These details should help define how to proceed.
