can Behr exterior waterproofing wood stain (latex) be diluted (with water?) and applied using a hand-held paint sprayer for larger areas?

If you dilute the stain it will loose it's protective qualities and may not protect the wood very long.

I personally have used a larger industrial pump-up sprayer (garden sprayer) to apply the product without diluting .  I am almost certain that a regular pump-up sprayer will work just fine.  I once used a hand held spray bottle to do spindles. :smileywink:

Here is a sprayer that has a special tip designed for deck stain:   1.5-Gal. Deck Sprayer

The paint dept at Home Depot sells a garden type sprayer specifically rated to spray Behr stains. It runs around $20. The main difference between it and a garden sprayer is the nozzle. However, when spraying stain, it is always advisable to "back brush" the stain to assure adhesion and eveness of appearance.

Hope this is of assistance
