Black goop

We are getting black goop in the bath tub and shower when running a hot bath or shower. I replaced the supply hoses to the hot water heater. It's still happening.   Any suggestions?
Anode maybe?

Hello Zionsparky, and welcome to the Community!

The anode rod could be the problem, I have seen that in the past from a deteriorated flex hose used at the water heater.   Also, is the black goop coming from the spigot or the shower head? Remove the bathroom lavatory faucet aerator to see if the same  black goop is collecting there as well. I have see black goop collect around the mouth of the tub spigot, this is sometimes mold that collects over time. An old toothbrush is good to keep around to lightly scrub those areas to release black goop that can collect. Rub your finger over the black goop. if it leaves a black "trail", then it is possibly  magnesium sulfide caused the a reaction with the heater's anode rod.
