Building a Spice Rack

I am building a spice rack in an already existing closet.  It use to be an ironing board closet. I want to know what type of wood I should use.  The dimensions of the boards would be 3" x 11 3/4". I would prefer the boards to be 1/2 inch thick.  Thank you!

Hello zaburger and welcome to the Community.

There are a variety of wood types you can use for your spice rack project.  Depending on the area you resided in, will determine your choices as well.  Some Home Depots offer maple, cherry and walnut.

If you are planning on painting these boards, the species is not as important because you will be covering it.

On line you have 1/2” poplar, oak, cedar.

If you step up to a 1 x 3 (actually size ¾” thick) you have additional options one of which includes clear pine.

Other alternatives are Melamine and Fiberboard.

I would advise that you visit your local store to find exactly what options they offer.

Thanks for your inquiry,

Charlotte
