Can Lights

Can anyone tell me the standard diameter for can lights? My home seems to have the smaller ones with halogen bulbs, but I'd like to convert them to LED.

Hey ianboyd,

Thanks for your question and welcome to the community.

Just like anything in and around your home, there really is no 'standard' size or shape to anything. This also pertains to your recessed lighting.

Generally speaking though, the most common installed size is 6" diameter housing using BR30 size/shape light bulbs.

You can easily change the bulbs, regardless if they are smaller than the BR30 size, to LED. However, the only surefire to make them IC rated is to change out the fixture or clear out the insulation at least 6 inches around the housing in the attic or space where it is installed.

LED light bulbs are the opposite in terms of giving out heat vs. halogen light bulbs. In fact, some  LED light bulbs are cool to the touch even after hours of being on at full capacity.

For any further questions, please feel free to reach out to us again.
