Can we use a universal remote (e.g. 349896) with Hampton Bay 54shrl fan?

We have Hampton Bay ceiling fans, model 54SHRL.  The remotes are falling apart from age, corrosion and being dropped.  Could buy new ones but we'd love to have wall-mount remotes instead (i.e., a little panel in place of the on/off wall switch).  Are there any that will work?

The store clerk told us the 349896 wall-mount universal would work.  However, its instructions are only for a fan that originally had mechanical controls  --  no remote at all.  The 54SHRL has a control unit for its own remote, of course.  Can we replace that?  If so, how can we get instructions?  Not brave enough to do it by trial and error!  If the 349896 won't work, is there another wall-mount remote that will work?

We know we'd be giving up the thermostatic features as well as the ability to reverse the spin direction..  But the inside of the fan also warns against using any other remote, particularly solid-state, warning of possible damage.  So is this a hopeless project?  Thanks!

Hello cabloms and welcome to The Community!  We are glad that you are here.

You have the Hampton Bay Windward II 54 in. Ceiling Fan (Model # 55295). The white ceiling fan is SKU 523342 and UPC 082392552961.  The brushed steel ceiling fan is SKU 523127 and UPC 082392552954).  The Windward II Owner’s Manual is located here

The Hampton Bay Team can help you with the options available for wall mounted remotes.  Contact them at 1-877-527-0313 and select option 2.  You will need to provide the SKUs and UPCs listed above so they can assist you with your project.

Best wishes on your project.
