White vinyl siding which was painted with too dark a color! Additional heat absorbtion causes permanent distortion damage. Elevation faced west, getting the full afternoon sun.

TROker,

Both vinyl and aluminum siding take acrylic house paints, such as Behr and Glidden beautifully, usually without a primer. You want to make sure that the surface is free of dirt, mildew and algae. To this end, a washing with a bleach containing detergent is useful, followed by a vigorous power washing. Of course, it can be washed by hand, but the power washer is a lot faster and easier.

Obviously, neither vinyl siding or aluminum will cause moisture related peeling, as does wooden siding. You merely have to assure good adhesion, and you will have years of good service from the acrylic paint. Acrylic paints are far more fade resistant than some of the original finishes found on early generation aluminum and vinyl siding.

One thing that is extremely important is that you do not use a significantly darker color than that which was original. You may change the color, but not significantly darken it. A dark color absorbs more heat and vinyl siding expands when hot. The result could be warped siding that will be permanently damaged.

I recently took the above picture as a great example of what can happen.

If you have ever seen vinyl siding before it goes up, you will notice that the nailing flanges have about inch long slots in the vinyl. The fastening nail is placed in the middle of the slot and not nailed down firmly. Should the vinyl expand when hot beyond the ability of that slot to move, it will bind up and the siding bow outward.

Hope this has been helpful.
