can be color matched. Unfortunately, transparent and semi-transparent stains cannot be matched, at least by means of the computerized equipment. Stains can be blended, and it is possible to alter stains "by eye", but no formulas are available for such work. The Home Depot paint desk is in general not normally set up for such blending or tinting.
HD paint associates will, however, be happy to open cans of standard stains and show you actual samples on wood. Do remember that every piece of wood has its own inherent coloration and that will affect the appearance of the stain. A sample of the actual wood is a definite benefit if, you have one to bring in.

"Solid colored stains can be color matched..."

Greetings Eugene440,

Everything that ordjen stated is true. The age of the wood, can also factor into the color, if the piece you are trying to match has been exposed to the weather and bleached by the sun, the original color will be different from what it is showing now.

Make sure to bring a piece of wood that you are trying to match to your local Home Depot.

In the aisles of The Home Depot paint department, we have samples of many of the wood stain colors available, but remember that the samples have been stained on fresh new wood. The words “closest” and “blending” will be used, when finding a stain to match the existing piece of wood that you bring into the store.

Good luck with your search and selection,
