Cinder Block Raised Planter

I am building a raised planting bed 4' x 20' x 2' tall out of cinder blocks. It will require 36 blocks per level and it will be 3 levels high. Do I need mortar / cement between the layers? If so, what is the best product for this purpose? How many bags would I need? Do I need a gravel base or can I build it directly on the dirt?

Hey Pineysue.

You would need to use a construction adhesive to glue the blocks together. In the Home Depot Garden Department we use the Liquid Nail Landscape Block Adhesive to glue the blocks together for our plant tables. It works quite well. Stack the blocks in a brick wall pattern and I would imagine that 10 tubes would probably get it done. No you would not need to put gravel or rock in the bottom. Put it directly on the dirt.
