Concrete subfloor

The tiles in my house were recently stripped but still has a lot of mortar left behind, can I use self-leveling concrete to prep the floor smooth for new tiles? Or do I need to grind down everything before I can use self-leveling concrete? Thank you

  Hi nsquare,

It is always best to remove all of the old thin-set prior to replacing a tile floor. Use a rotary hammer drill with a chisel bit to remove the large chunks of thin-set. Follow up with a grinder to remove the remaining bits and smooth the subfloor. If you do not have a rotary hammer, you may rent one at your local Home Depot.
