Digital Timer

I recently purchased a Defiant Indoor Digital Timer with 4 wires (black, white, red and green).  My light switch only has 2 wires (black and white).  What is the proper wiring for this?

What you have in your wall junction box is what's called a "switch loop".  Basically power comes down from the light, passes through the switch, and back up to the light.  The timer you purchased requires a neutral wire to function.  Defiant used to make a timer that didn't use a neutral but I'm not sure it's available any more.  Any timer that does not require a neutral will not work with compact fluorescent or LED bulbs.  They trickle a tiny amount of electricity through the bulb and that wasn't an issue with incandescent bulbs but can cause odd behavior with compact fluorescent and LED bulbs.

Hello MCONNOR.  Welcome to the Community!

Please see the response I posted 3 weeks ago on a very similar question.  You may consider your red wire the same as the blue wire from that thread.
