Does a sanded deck need to be primed before painting? Some spots are bare and some still have paint.

Does a sanded deck need to be primed before painting? Some spors are to bare wood, and somw still have paint. The last coat was water base.

It depends on what is presently on the surface of the deck.  It's not very common to have paint on a deck - usually it's a stain.  Paint will peal up and not usually last as long as stain.

 

  •  If the existing coating is a stain, then just apply a coat of the stain to the raw wood areas before applying the whole.
  • If the deck has been painted, then "yes" - spot prime those raw wood area before painting the whole.
