Does adding plywood to a door make it stronger?

If I add a sheet of plywood to an interior hollow core door will it make it stronger?  I have a hollow core door.  I have a piece of plywood.  I don't have a solid core door.  So If I glued and screwed the plywood to the door do I gain anything?

You'll gain something but it's pretty difficult to say how much.  Thicker plywood would be better but it probably won't replace a solid door no matter what you do.

Hey Hmm101,

Depending on the existing thickness and size of the door, alongside the plywood you use and how well you fasten it to it, will determine if it will make it 'stronger'.

I will say though, that by the time and effort you place in adding plywood to the door, it may be a better option for looks and function to replace it with a solid design door.

If  you did go the plywood route, just make sure that the door can open and close properly, since you've added more to it, and the new thickness could interfere with the casing surrounding it.

Let us know if you have any further questions,
