Door Knobs

Have an old house - replacing door knobs in bedroom. Bought the Defiant knobs but the cylinder is too big. Are there smaller cylinders?

Hi kzagranski,

Thank you for your question and welcome to our community.

The reason the old cylinders were smaller is because the doors were thinner as well.  The older doors are about 1 inch wide whereas the new doors are 1 ¼ to 1 ½ inches wide.   Depending on where you live, you will have to look up some of the antique stores that specialize in the older style doors.

Out here on the West Coast, in south county, we have several stores that specialize in these types of hardware items.  One of these is called Muffs, just off the traffic circle in the City of Orange, CA at 135 S. Glassell, 92866.

I did a search for “old house door hardware” and came up with many different sites you may want to check out.

If you want to keep you original doors, it will be necessary to research the original hardware that was used for them.  The other option would be to replace the doors, which could open up its own can of worms for you since the new doors are going to be thicker than the old ones.

Please let us know if we can be of further assistance with your labor of love project.
