Hello Tell,

Welcome to the community.

The easiest way that I’ve found is to install the lockset and deadbolt.

Then put paint or lipstick on the end of the deadbolt and the striker. While turning the knob so that the striker is all the way in close the door and release the handle, turn the deadbolt. This will leave a mark on the jamb exactly where you need to drill the holes. I normally use red acrylic paint. It shows up great and wipes off very easily.

Follow the manufactures recommendation on what size you need to drill and then trace the plate and chisel out the area so that the plate will set flush with the jamb.

Here is a video on how to install a deadbolt. It will show you the same way that I described at about 2:10 minutes in.

I hope this helps you get the holes in your jambs all lined up.

If you have any other questions please let me know. I would love to help.
