Drill Screws into Cement Board

I am trying to drill concrete countertop molds into Duroc cement board and the screws just fall out after I drill them in. What am i doing wrong? Using 5/8" construction screws.

Hey Deirdre1.

Tapcon Concrete anchors are typically used when screwing down cement boards. The screws need to be long enough to anchor the cement boards to a wood subfloor or in this case, through the cement board but not through the countertop.

Cement board just doesn't have a lot of holding power for screws, it just falls apart as you've learned.  Typically, it's screwed to something else, like a subfloor.

I don't know much about casting concrete countertops but the examples I have seen, the countertops are cast in a form using melamine.  Once the concrete cures, the form is removed and the countertop put in place.  It sounds like you are trying to cast in place.
