Hi there hondasux09 :smileyhappy: and welcome to the community!

Can you hang drywall over stucco ( you are probably referring to a knockdown texture) really depends on two things.

Roughness of the texture you have right now and the wall you are going to install this drywall over.

In other words if there are a wood framing members behind the "stucco" that you can attach a new thinner drywall to you are fine, and as long the texture that is present right now it’s not interfering with the drywall finish you are good to go.

Couple things you should consider before "overlaying" drywall.

You will probably have to extend electrical boxes and work around door and window casings.

When it comes to installation I would recommend using 1/4' or a 3/8" drywall and plenty of drywall adhesive.

It is almost impossible to find all of the studs behind the existing finish so drywall adhesive its actually what’s going to hold the  new drywall up.

Hope this helps.
