Eletrical tester showing no power to GFCI even though there is power

Can anyone help troubleshoot this issue?  Is there any reason by a voltage (pen tester) shows no power to the live (or neutral) slots in a GFCI even though there is power to / through the outlet?  I know there is power through the outlet because appliances work when plugged in to the GFCI and the GFCI works because there is no power when I push the test button.  I recently replaced a faulty GFCI.  The voltage tester works on other outlets.  I can't figure it out.

Thanks

Hey ASK2000,

Welcome to the community.

This one is definitely a head scratcher. The only thing I can think of is if you haven't used another tester on the GFCI, an actual GFCI tester, shown below.

I've seen some of the pen testers can be a little inconsistent on some receptacles sometimes. While I don't know if that is the case, I'd say try the GFCI tester first.

Is there a reason you are troubleshooting it in the first place or are you just wanting to test it for the sake of testing it?

Let me know, and we can assist further.
