Fake Wood Paneling

My house was remodeled in the 70s and has dark paneling that looks like wood but isn't.  I want to brighten my house by painting.  I really don't want to remove the paneling.  Do I have to prime or is there a paint I can use without the extra step?  It is very dark brown.  I want something like a light yellow or putty.

Suggestions?  Also what type of tools(brushes) will I need?

I would personally have great reservations about going straight  to the slick plastic paneling with the new self-priming paints. Of the water soluble primers available, The Gripper by Glidden has superior adhesion to most. It may also be tinted to your finish color.

In any event, with slick, dark brown paneling, you are not going to get good coverage with only one coat of any product.. You will definitely  have to go around twice, especially if you want a light yellow.

Hope this has helped
