Frameless Mirrors

I am wanting to install a frameless 36x60 mirror.  How difficult is this, what kind of tools are needed, and is it best to hire a professional?

Hi Mongetron,

Thanks for your question and welcome to the community.

If you already have the frame-less 36" x 60" mirror, then you've already done the hard part.

Reason why is that mirrors of that size need to have a beveled or at least a smooth edge. Plus, a mirror cut in that size without any edges just looks cheap and unprofessional.

So, assuming you have this mirror, you can use either a mirror mastic adhesive or mirror clips to fasten it to the wall. You will need a helper to help hold it onto the wall, but this can be a do-it-yourself project.

Make sure the wall where it will be installed is clean and level.  Again, its up to you to either use the mirror mastic or clips, or both. The first step is to ensure that the mirror will be installed level. Use a laser or bubble level and mark the top portion of the mirror to make sure this happens.

Mirror mastics usually come in caulk tubes, and are very easy to apply. They are specially formulated so that they don't burn through reflective coating of the mirror. One that your local Home Depot sells that works very effectively is shown below and linked here.

Again, you'll need a helper and both of you will wear gloves for safety while applying it to the wall. You'll use duct or another similar strong tape to temporarily hold it onto the wall while the mastic cures completely. Take off the tape once the mastic has set and bonded properly.

For the mirror clips, opt for using a lot to ensure they fasten securely into the wall. You can also use a mirror mount, shown below, with screws driven into studs for a secure install.

At the end of the day, installing a mirror even of this size can easily by done.
