Fridge/Stove Proximity

I am remodeling my kitchen.  What are the rules about putting a refrigerator next to a stove?

Thanks.

Hi Diyercleoh,

Our kitchen and bath designers recommend a minimum of 9 inches between the stove and any wall or refrigerator and prefer 15 to 20 inches of space between the refrigerator and any cooktop or stove.

The reason is safety and convenience. When cooking you need room for big pots and long handles and a place to sit hot items when removed from the stove.

If the refrigerator is too close to the stovetop, you will not have enough room to maneuver and too little counter space to place the items you are cooking with.

In addition you do not want the refrigerator doors interfering with the cooking space. If your refrigerator is a large single door unit, opening the door right next to the stove could cause some safety issues.

You don’t want your child opening the refrigerator door right in to your back as you are cooking, or have them right next to a hot stove when they want a snack.

So common sense should prevail. You want the refrigerator in a convenient place but not too close to the stove.

Our kitchen designers can give you some great ideas for a safe and convenient kitchen design.
