Garage Door spring tightening

When disengaged from the opener, the garage door doesn't stay open when put half way up.  I'm trying to tighten the torsion springs, but when I do, the shaft bends.  I'm afraid the shaft will break if I keep tightening the spring.  What am I doing wrong?

Hello kdc and welcome to the Community.

Adjusting the torsion spring of a garage door opener is very dangerous and is not recommended to be done by a DIY.  I would enlist the assistance of a professional.  Home Depot does have service providers for this.

Thank you for your inquiry.

As Charlotte said adjusting torsion springs is VERY dangerous and is really something better left to a professional.

Hi KDC,

If the springs are too weak to hold the door open, then the ONLY solution is to replace the springs. As mentioned above by Char and Adam444, THIS IS NOT A DIY JOB, call a professional garage door installer to perform the replacement.

Trying to tighten warn springs will result in the spring breaking and you do not want to see the damage or injuries caused by a spring failure.
