Garbage Disposal

What if I have a garbage disposal, that after using the wrench to get it going, it stops operating after about a second, with the blades sounding like they are grinding against each other? Does it need to be replaced or possibly the blades tightened?

Hello CPMD14.  We’re going on a journey to the center of your garbage disposal to free your blades. Grinding blades may indicate that the disposal is trying to work but caught on something in the chamber.  The grinding mechanism may be jammed and needs to be freed.

You mentioned that you have already used the wrench to get it moving and then it stops.  So again, first turn OFF the power.  Look inside the disposal using a flashlight – especially along the outer edge of the shredding disk.  Did anyone at your home put something large or gummy inside the unit that is caught along the “sides” of the chamber?   It may be a food product, eating utensil, or other household item.

You will need to remove the object carefully using tongs or pliers.  NEVER stick your hand into the disposal.

Then use your wrench like a crank – going back and forth in both directions until you can go in a complete circle.  Turn on the water and then the disposal.  If your problem persists, you may need to have the unit serviced.   Depending upon the model, age, and wear of the disposal, it may be cheaper to replace the unit.

I hope this information helps.  Please keep us updated on the status of your garbage disposal.
